An area rug is a great way to bring together the décor in your living room. However, a rug should always be placed practically keeping in mind the layout of each space. For example, it is best that your rug does not block an opening door, is placed far enough away from heat sources such as stoves or fireplaces to avoid fire risks, and is separated from damp or drafty areas, since humidity can cause the rug’s material to deteriorate.
What is the ideal placement? How can I combine my rug with the furniture? These are some of the most common questions and is why we have created this post - to help you find the best location for your rug.
Furthermore, in our frequently asked questions section you will find more answers and information that might interest you.
Now, to know how to place a rug, you must first ask yourself some basic questions: What size rug do I want and what space do I have available? Do I want it to be in a color that stands out and contrasts or that fits the tonality of the space? Keep reading and we will give you some tips that will help you.
How big does the living room rug have to be?
Rugs help us define spaces, divide them, or give a feeling of spaciousness to a room. That is why choosing the size of a rug is an important decision, since it can achieve the opposite effect of what you are looking for.
At alp_ we suggest three possibilities for a living room rug size:
- Determine the size of the rug based on the space that the position of the sofa or sofas and armchairs leave between them.
- Fit the carpet to extend about 30/35 centimeters beneath the sofas and armchairs.
- Choose dimensions that allow for all the living room furniture to be placed upon the rug, clearly defining the area.
How do I choose the color for my living room rug?
Choosing your rug’s color is as important as the choice of design, since the contrast between the different colors will determine whether the rug is a subtle, neutral, or highly contrasted carpet. As with size, we suggest that you keep in mind the following tips:
- First, select the background color of the rug based on your color palette, usually looking for a contrast with the color of the floor, and not simply a continuation of it.
- Second, select the colors of the design according to your tastes, or coordinate them with the upholstery, cushions or even with the color of the walls.
- If you would like to design a neutral rug, use similar colors within the same range of tones or similar shades of color.
- If you want a more contrasting rug, decide for yourself the colors that define it, with a greater or lesser level of contrast between the colors.
