Alpujarra rugs

Alpujarra rugs

Alpujarra rugs are handmade rugs made in the province of Granada, in the region of Las Alpujarras.

These rugs have a very ancient tradition, where the oldest examples date from the seventeenth century.

At first, this technique was used for Alpujarra bedspreads, which later it was thought that it could be implemented in rugs by changing the materials and preserving the fabric structure. The linen of the warp increased the thickness, as well as the wool that formed the weft, providing greater strength.

The technique used by today's rugs is known as "Speck", referring to the rough surface of the weft. Although this technique has not been inherited directly from the Arabs, it has been influenced by how they made their looms.

We can also find Alpujarra rugs in relief, presenting hollow parts and other areas in relief. This type of carpet, in a traditional way, was based on Muslim geometric elements, such as stars or linked borders. Thus, generally, they used only one color, or at most two, one for the raised specks and the other in contrast for the background. They boast of having a very unique visual and tactile effect.

The Alpujarra carpet that we can find today is based on the fabric that we call "openwork", manufactured on a vertical or high heald loom. It has a structure in the form of a sheet, which provides elasticity and flexibility, for this, it is made using two series of threads, a longitudinal one called "warp" and a transverse one called "weft".

Generally, the warp in the carpet is usually thick cotton, interspersed with a woolen weft; although the latter will depend on the design and the colors that the designer wants to implement.
