10 tricks to clean carpets at home

In this post we are going to share some tips and tricks to clean your carpets and make them look like new. If you are already enjoying one of our rugs, or are going to buy one, we recommend that you read our maintenance instructions so that they stay as new for as long as possible.

Before following any cleaning indications, you should take into account the material of your rugs, since the care may vary depending on the composition.

1. The most important tip is to vacuum your rugs regularly, especially if they are placed in well-trodden areas. A good vacuuming should be carried out in the direction of the weave, always use a brushless nozzle, avoid motorized brushes, and always be carried out on with a high suction power.

2. If your carpet has been stained or suffered a small burn (for example, with a cigarette) you should brush or scrape the area gently. This will ensure that the surrounding pile "covers" and corrects the stain.

3. To act quickly is the golden rule, since the longer you leave the stain the more difficult it will be to remove it.

4. If a liquid has been spilled, the first thing you should do is remove the excess of the spilled product with a clean paper or cloth, or if it is a solid use a teaspoon or the edge of a butterknife.

5. If the stain is water soluble, apply a soapy water solution specific to the rug’s material with a clean sponge or cloth to the stained area, and dry excess moisture with a clean cloth or paper napkin.

Repeat until the stain no longer comes out and starts to disappear. Finally, place a dry thick cloth or paper napkin over the area, weighing it down with a heavy object. Change the napkin or cloth once or twice once it has soaked up the dampness, then let air dry.

6. If the stain is grease-based, soak the corner of a clean towel with a small amount of a solvent (rubbing alcohol, acetone, etc.) and apply it on the stained area. Do not pour the solvent directly on the rug, as you could damage the backing or the adhesive of the carpet. Apply the product from the outside of the stain inwards to avoid spreading further.

Once the stain is removed, dry the fibers with kitchen paper or even with a hair dryer. Don't forget to wear gloves to avoid possible skin irritations.

7. We recommend that you first do a test on a small area of the stain using soap and water or solvent to determine which treatment will be the most appropriate.

8. Whenever you clean a carpet, use neutral soaps or detergents (not alkaline or with a high pH) to avoid affecting the color of the carpet.

9. If you are going to buy a product to clean your carpet from a supermarket, we recommend using a dry foam or a good quality rug shampoo and that you follow the manufacturer's instructions. Before washing, vacuum the carpet thoroughly.

10. Finally, whenever you finish cleaning a carpet, let it air dry until the dampness has evaporated entirely and avoid stepping on it when wet. Never roll a wet rug because the fibers will be irreparably damaged.

How to clean carpets at home with homemade products?

As we mentioned before, you should always consider the material of your carpet before cleaning. The best advice to keep your rug clean is to vacuum it frequently, which helps to avoid the accumulation of dust and an overall dirty appearance.

However, if the rug has already been stained and you are looking for a solution:

-          Use baking soda with a pinch of salt, spread the mixture over the stain, let it act for an hour and remove the remnants with a vacuum cleaner. The bicarbonate releases dust and bacteria from the fabric and improves the smell.

-          Hot water with vinegar: spray the carpet pile with this mix and gently rub the moistened surface with a natural bristle brush, then let it air out until it is completely dry.

-          If you stain your carpet with oil or grease, sprinkle a bit of cornstarch on it, let it act for 30 minutes, vacuum and then gently brush.

How to clean a very dirty carpet?

For carpets that need extra special care, we recommend that you take the rug to a professional, since if you make a mistake and use a product that is not indicated, you could damage not only the color but also the fabric.

For professional cleaning we recommend that they use an injection-extraction system carried out by the blade of a machine that injects jets of soapy solution onto the pile of the carpet and simultaneously vacuums and removes dampness and dirt.

Once the process has finished, the machine has managed to suck up to 90% of the humidity. This injection-extraction system is carried out by some carpet cleaning professionals who have the appropriate machinery, and in some cases, it can be done at home.
